In Italy, the total number of newly diagnosed HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infections peaked in 2012, when 4,176 new cases were recorded. Thereafter, the number gradually decreased until 2020, when 1,393 individuals were newly diagnosed with HIV, to rise again in 2021 and 2022. This virus is responsible for AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which is a condition that remarkably weakens the immune system, making the contraction of diseases much more likely.

In 2022, roughly 39 million people suffered from HIV worldwide. The number of people living with HIV steadily grew from 2000 to 2022. Nonetheless, the number of new HIV infections decreased over time.
